Fischer Projections

Haworth Projections

Simple sugars will exist primarily as a hemiacetal in solution. When sugars are represented in this way, the representation is referred to as a Haworth projection. In these cyclic structures, the names are changed to account for the size of the ring, and the position of the anomeric hydroxyl group as indicated below:
